School leadership Needs Assessment at, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, dated 15th November 2016
November 15, 2016
Prof Venkatesh Kumar of TISS and Prof Sharon Ravitch of University of Pennsylvania USA facilitated this session held at Hotel Trident, BKC, Mumbai. This well-attended session had 24 participants. The special features of this session were that one third of the attendees were Municipal school principals, who shed light on the problems being faced by these schools, including adverse family background of students, problems related to medium of instruction and teaching of English, teachers overburdened because of government duty, problems of teacher motivation and giving individual attention to students, absenteeism and poor involvement of parents. Dr Ananya Samajdar and Ms Dilnavaz Munshi, Programme Coordinators of CALEM, played a catalytic role in obtaining inputs and active participation from the attending school leaders, also playing the role of translators. This session was especially interesting since a variety of stakeholders were in attendance – municipal school principals, elite and mid-range school leaders, and NGO representatives. Attendees expressed a range of learning needs such as how to elicit obedience of staff, observing and giving feedback on TLMs, handling discipline issues, child protection and preparation of school plans. The session also saw Prof Sharon Ravitch orienting participants about institutional research and the need for it.
