January 11, 2017
Keeping with the partnership between CALEM, TISS and American School of Bombay, the sixth and final school leadership needs assessment was held at the ASB premises, through the kind auspices of ASB. This needs assessment was facilitated by Prof Venkatesh Kumar of TISS and Prof Sharon Ravitch of University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) USA. This session was characterized by participation of multiple stakeholders (school leaders and also leaders of NGOs working on school education). 14 such stakeholders participated in this session. Dr Ananya Samajdar, Programme Coordinator of CALEM, briefed the participants about PMMMNMTT and the rationale of CALEM. Given that the participants were mostly highly experienced and knowledgeable in the area of school education, the inputs expressed for enhancing the content framework and delivery mechanisms were very perceptive, valuable and concrete. The participants deliberated at length on challenges such as the use of technology and the implementation of activity-based learning, along with obstacles pertaining to the mindset of students, teachers and parents. The distributed model of leadership was also discussed. The participants also expressed the need for a corpus of engaging materials (relevant to the Indian context) on integrating creativity, civic values and innovation into the curriculum and teaching-learning processes such as case studies, documentaries of successful school models etc. The session was followed by an interactive session on holistic child development by Ms Laura Hoffman, clinical social worker from USA.
